The Picap 40th anniversary documentary is now available on 3Cat

The label Picap celebrates four decades of history with the documentary Picap, 40 anys creant espai musical català, now available on the 3Cat platform.

Directed by Pau Guixà and Àlex Gómez-Font, the documentary offers a comprehensive journey through the trajectory of one of the most influential independent record labels in the country.

The documentary achieved strong audience ratings and ranked among the most-watched programs in its time slot, establishing itself as a production of broad interest beyond the strictly musical sphere. This positive reception reinforces its value as a key piece for understanding the recent history of music in the country and expands its reach through its online availability on 3Cat.

40 years key to understanding Catalan music

Founded in 1984 by Joan-Carles Doval in a challenging context for the Catalan music industry, Picap was created with the aim of supporting music from the Catalan-speaking territories. Since then, the label has played a key role in the development of the music scene.

Its catalogue includes essential names such as Gato Pérez, Companyia Elèctrica Dharma and Port-Bo, and it has been instrumental in the rise of Catalan rock with artists like Sau, Sangtraït and Adrià Puntí. It has also helped preserve the tradition of the Nova Cançó with figures such as Raimon, Maria del Mar Bonet and Lluís Llach.

A documentary with a contemporary perspective

Produced by TresÁngulos Films for 3Cat, the documentary combines archival material, testimonies and a contemporary взгляд at the music industry.

The project brings together diverse voices from the sector, from historic artists to new generations linked to the label, creating a collective narrative that tells not only the story of Picap, but also that of contemporary Catalan music.

With a duration of 55 minutes, the documentary stands out for its ability to connect past and present, and to show how music forms part of the country’s cultural identity.

From the physical era to the digital age: constant adaptation

The documentary also highlights Picap’s ability to adapt to changes in the industry, especially with the arrival of the digital era and the transformation of music consumption habits.

In this context, Picap has launched new sub-labels such as Delirics, focused on new trends and the urban scene, with artists such as P.A.W.N. Gang, Sexenni, Flashy Ice Cream and Scorpio.

Now available online on 3Cat

Following a premiere affected by programming changes, the documentary is now available to watch online on the 3Cat platform.
